Every page should have a unique title that is relevant to that page and its content.

This is very important to remember because search engines place emphasis on singular pages rather than domain names.

This also includes your meta descriptions such as keywords and page description. Don’t just simply duplicate everything from a template and expect your site and/or pages to rank in SE’s.

Many times this requires that you redesign your website by adding meta tags and relevant content to your website. It also involves changing the structure of your site into something that is more search engine friendly. An example is ensuring that your link structure is correct and follows through into the different sections of your site. This helps the ’spiders’ to properly crawl your site and find all the pages that pertain to your domain.

Another important piece of information is the image ‘alt’ tags on your site. Bottom line is – make use of it! Give a short and clear description of what your picture is about and make sure that it has a lot to do with your content. Doing so helps search engines to identify media content and place the important of the graphic together with your content.

Header or <H1> Tags

OK so now you’re off to start the content on your site. Is there anything that you should know? Well, of course there is. When writing your content you should remember that you will almost always have a heading. Most people don’t realize the power and efficiency that headers have so they just add it in; in Italics or Bold. However, you should be using a simple HTML code that looks like this <H1> … </H1> and surrounds the text that you want to use as your heading.

When SE’s crawl your site they take into consideration these tags as this defines what your content is about. They would then most likely always look inside the rest of the page to find relevancy in the preceding text.

There are no limits to the number of <H1> tags that you can or should have but just remember not to make your entire page <H1> just to gain popularity! The SE’s already thought of that and decided to discard pages like that from their databases.

Duplicate Content

I have been taught that duplicate content is a big no no in Search Engine Optimization, however, from my own experiences in using duplicate content I have noticed that it is not off-site duplicate content that is a problem but rather on-site duplicate content that will give you negative rankings SERP’s – or both.

By off-site duplicate content I simply mean content that is not on your web site. So using content from sources such as ezinearticles.com will not have a negative effect on your rankings and SERP’s but repeating content within your own site will indeed receive these negatives from any search engine.
